Life coaches are extremely diverse in focus and approach. Both a blessing and a curse, it makes it hard to choose. However, if you want to do some real soul-searching or deep reflection about meaning, your higher purpose, or other big issues, you can narrow the field significantly by looking for a spiritual life coach.
Some people think that spiritual life coaches only deal with religious concerns, but that’s not true. They’re a wide-ranging group too. But, they’re focused and experienced in helping people take a deep look inside themselves, see the whole person that they are, and dig into those big questions.
What Does a Spiritual Life Coach Do?
I’ve dedicated a whole post to what a spiritual life coach is so I won’t dwell on that here. Instead, I’ll focus on two ways they tend to specialize and stand out.
- Dealing with issues and interests that are deeply personal and/or spiritual in nature including aspects of the divine though not necessarily religious in nature.
- Helping to bring what’s deeply personal and/or spiritual in you into how to live your life or show up in the world. Another way to say this is to embrace enlightened or conscious living as it’s defined by you, not by external stimulus and pressure.
Take a quick look at both and see if they resonate with you.
Working on What’s Deeply Personal and Spiritual
Most spiritual life coaches can help you with a number of the following intentions:
- Know yourself, your values, and your aspirations
- Understand your personal humanity and mortality
- Know and appreciate who you are in the human or natural world
- Define or redefine your life purpose
- Create greater meaning in what you do and the relationships you have
- Develop greater compassion and generosity for yourself and others
- Develop your self-worth, your voice, and the confidence to express it
- Define the personal and/or professional life you want according to you – not the external world around you
- Learn to disengage from external stimulation and pressure so that you can spend quality time with yourself
This is when a spiritual life coach is particularly well-suited to assist you. Through the coaching process, they offer grounding and centering, compassion, support, structure, and guidance. This type of environment is more natural and conducive to deep reflection as well as inner work and embodied practices.
Leading Your Best and Conscious Life
It’s one thing to get to know yourself, your values, and your aspirations. But, it’s another thing to lead your life accordingly. This is a common challenge, particularly in this modern world that’s bursting with information, overly stimulating, and constantly promoting a compare-and-despair culture. It all tends to eviscerate that essential human inner connection.
Perhaps this is why more people today are seeking a deeper personal and spiritual connection. Many within this group aspire to bring more of their personal and spiritual perspectives into their ordinary or daily lives to feel truly engaged and connected and create more meaning and satisfaction. You may be one of these people.
Achieving this goal means you live more consciously by bringing your inner self and inner truths into your external experiences and engagements. This is a perpetually dynamic and ongoing process, which does have its challenges. A coach can help you navigate the process and follow your own North Star.
What a Spiritual Life Coach Can Help You With
A spiritual life coach can help you in this pursuit in the following ways:
- Facilitate your progress along this journey of self-discovery and enlightenment whether the current goal is to gain perspective, identify and take actions, or both.
- Help you clarify and define what living more consciously means to you on a practical level, i.e., how to operationalize that in a way that’s right for you at this time.
- Support you as you experiment with and take big or tiny steps toward bringing more of yourself and what has meaning to you into your external social and professional life.
- Identify and share tools and practices that get you out of your thinking mind and endless mental loops so that you can open more to your inner self and its wisdom – open to the whole person that you are.
- Equip you with quick, easy, and in-the-moment techniques that encourage you to tap inside yourself even as you engage with others.
As you can see, spiritual life coaches are not strictly focused on religious themes. They can assist you in broad and generic spiritual exploration as well as help you bring more of your personal and spiritual self into ordinary everyday living.
