Smudging is a purification and energy-clearing practice whereby wands made of certain dried healing herbs are lit, the flame extinguished and the smoldering smoke passed over a person, an object, or throughout a room or sacred space in order to purify and clear. Liquid smudge is a smoke-free alternative.
What’s liquid smudging?
Liquid smudging is the same thing as other natural forms of smudging. The difference is energetic plant-based hydrosol sprays are used instead of dried-herb wands or sticks. Hydrosols, like essential oils, are a product of the distillation process. The water-loving plant components end up in hydrosol while the fat- or lipid-loving components end up in the essential oil.
Why Use Liquid Smudging Instead of Dried Herbs?
The primary reason to use liquid instead of dried herbs is the former’s scent is very light and dissipates quickly. Still, its energetic properties linger much longer than the scent. In addition, applying a liquid form of mudge is safer because there is no threat of fire, and it’s more convenient because you just spray.
There are a couple of reasons why liquid smudge cannot completely replace herbal smudging for all purposes. For one, tradition and ceremony are important in their own right. In addition, liquid smudge doesn’t have the same capability of signaling when the person or room is clear as herbal smudging does. The behavior of the smoke emanating from the smoldering herbal wand or stick gives an indication of when the surrounding energy is clear. Liquid smudging cannot do that.
Still, in a spa or wellness center setting, liquid smudging can clear the treatment rooms
between sessions with very little session drift (the effect of one session on another). Smudging is beneficial between energy work sessions as well as between massages or other forms of healing.
