Essential Oils and Lunar Phases – The Waxing Moon

Image of Waxing Crescent Moon for essential oils for the Waxing MoonThe power of essential oils for the Waxing Moon is best captured during the interim lunar phase when the moon is growing from the New Moon into a Full Moon. In other during the 7.38 days of the waxing phase.

Over the lunar cycle, the quality of Moon’s energy evolves through a regular monthly pattern moving from New, Waxing, Full, and Waning. Here the focus is on the Waxing phase of the moon.

Using subtle aromatherapy (energetic or vibrational attributes of essential oils) and essential oils’ effects on the mind and emotions, you can pair specific oils to support the intentions designed for the energetic qualities of each moon phase.

The Quality of Waxing Moon Energy Throughout the Phase.

The Waxing Moon follows the New Moon. During this phase, the moon fills and becomes full. Its energy is most closely aligned with the New Moon, which is about opening to change and beginnings with an eye toward rediscovering or reinvigorating a personal or spiritual path. Waxing Moon energy supports the unfolding of new ideas and actions with an emphasis on reflection, assessment of progress, and adjustment.

Waxing Moon’s Reinforces the New Moon

As an extension to the New Moon phase, the Waxing Moon phase is focused on fulfilling those new intentions or goals. It is less about joyfully opening and embracing change and rediscovery and more about getting down to the business of making the change happen or achieving that goal. It’s a time to check-in, particularly with the self, assess, and make any necessary adjustments to approaches or strategies set in motion during the New Moon. It’s about assuring that the inner stage is appropriately set for new growth and successful transition. During this phase, personal challenges are to be overcome and this can require strength, courage, insight, and fortitude.

Additionally, the Waxing Moon is about drawing in energy, power, opportunity, and abundance. It’s about attracting people and things (e.g., a soul mate, a new job, prosperity). The Waxing Moon gives aspirations and plans an extra boost.

Changing Energetic Influence Over the Waxing Phase

Many believe that as the moon waxes – grows from a thin crescent to a thick semi-spherical form – the force of the moon’s influence intensifies. Following this logic, smaller feats and transitions should be attempted during the crescent days and significant challenges (e.g., overcoming chronic undesirable behavior patterns or chronic illness) are best confronted as one nears the Half Moon or Full Moon.

Its energy matches forward movement and actualization earlier in this phase before the First Quarter Moon (half full). Once it passes this point, its energy begins to reorient toward the Full Moon, which is about letting go, release and endings. The focus at this stage is still forward and fulfillment of New Moon intentions. However, more and more the expression is aligned with releasing.

Meaning of The Between Phase of Waxing

Both the Waxing and Waning Moon are about reflection: the former is more yin (inward) in nature while the latter is more yang in nature (outward).

During the Waxing Moon, one seeks to understand and define their future. Connection and communication with authentic emotions, thoughts, and spirituality is an integral part of this phase.

We can best appreciate the metaphysical meaning with illustrations of essential oil subtle properties.

Blending Essential Oils With the Qualities of Waxing Moon Energy

Relection and Introspection

Cypress, copaiba, myrrh, and blue lotus are great essential oils for introspection, assessment, and evaluating choices. Cedar, thyme, and rosemary are quintessential Waxing Moon essential oils. The three encourage focus and concentration.

Changing Gears and Helping Something New Unfold

Changing gears and starting something new can involve uncertainty, stress, and fear even when one wants to institute a change. Bergamot is an excellent essential oil for encouragement, belief in oneself, and cultivating the capacity to let go of control and see the positive in new opportunities. Thyme instills self-confidence and courage, rosemary and cedar increase willpower and cedar helps one withstand challenges and difficult circumstances.

Fortitude and Commitment

A combination of these six essential oils can help a person stay on task, and confront difficult choices with greater clarity, objectivity, and fortitude. Virginia cedar, Norway pine, and Scotch pine energize and strengthen. Ginger also strengthens and instills courage and confidence. Hyacinth promotes courage, perseverance, and fortitude. Coriander motivates and instills spontaneity and enthusiasm. These essential oils support the transition from thought to action.

Drawing Protection and Positive Energy

The effect of Juniper berry is very much like the waxing moon itself: it draws in positive, protective, and supportive energy and influences. Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) instills joy and enthusiasm and helps one to live more in the moment.

Using the Waxing Moon Essential Oils or Blend

How one uses Waxing Moon essential oils varies with beliefs and spiritual practices.

Some Considerations On the Use and Application of Essential Oils

Essential oils, essential oil blends, dried herbs of the same plant or botanical species, and hydrosols can be added to the Waxing Moon rituals.

Note: It’s important to know the botanical name of the plant species because you want to receive the specific healing properties of that specific species in particular. Burn dried herbs along with traditional smudging herbs or sticks.

However, don’t burn essential oils. They can be diffused using a proper essential oil diffuser (see our beginner’s guide to simple inexpensive diffusers).

Always use good quality oils and adhere to the appropriate dilution for the oils for a particular application.

Diffuser Oils for the Waxing Moon

Add diffuser oils to any ceremonial space. Just a few drops of the blend will be sufficient because less is more when it comes to subtle aromatherapy. However, a ceremony isn’t necessary. One can set an intention for the lunar phase and use the diffuser oils during the phase. Diffuse the blend a couple of days before the lunar phase begins for preparation and a couple of days after for continuity.

Personal Inhalers Charged With Waxing Moon Essential Oils

Personal Inhalers provide an easy, convenient way to carry the blend with you over a few days during the lunar phase of choice. You can inhale the supportive scent wherever desired.

Moon Phase Ritual Baths

You can add essential oils to ritual baths. Baths are often the ritual of choice with the moon because of the intrinsic relationship between the moon and water. Make sure to use these wonderfully powerful natural substances safely. Choose the right essential oils, use only a few drops, and use a dispersant to ensure that the oils and water mix or emulsify. For more detailed instructions, see our blog post on using essential oils in the bath.
